Plant a Tree for National Tree Week - 23rd November - 1st December 2019

There are many ways in which we can help nature –and it badly needs our help! The latest State of Nature Report shows that many of our native species are in trouble, with some in steep decline. Each one of us can do our bit to help slow or reverse that decline. One practical way is to plant trees. Trees absorb carbon and release oxygen, thereby helping to mitigate climate change while increasing biodiversity. We are fortunate to live in a part of the country which already has good tree cover, but the fact remains that the UK is one of the least wooded countries in Europe. Our 13% forest cover puts us close the bottom ranking of 42 European countries. The situation is beginning to change, with large-scale planting schemes now underway, but scientists predict that devastating climate change will become irreversible within a decade unless we all take action now.

This year, National Tree Week runs from 23 November to 1 December, culminating in the “Big Climate Fightback” on Saturday 30 November, when The Woodland Trust hope that one million people in the UK will pledge to plant a tree. By mid-October over 15,000 people had already pledged to do so. So why not add your name? Visit the Big Climate Fightback web site.

Stowey Green Spaces Group hope to mark Big Climate Fightback day by adding saplings to the Stowey A39 Bypass Wood, which stretches from the Stogursey Lane traffic lights to the Church Centre. So if you have saplings to spare, growing for instance in the wrong place your garden, and are looking for a home for them, then come to the Village Hall car park at 10 am on Saturday 30th November, sapling and fork/spade in hand, where Stowey Green Spaces Group will be waiting to help.
